22,000 E-Bikes Recalled Over ‘Fire, Explosion And Burn’ Hazards

A company is recalling about 22,000 E-bikes because of “fire, explosion and burn” hazards. Several injuries have been reported.

The problem with the recalled Ancheer E-bikes stems from the lithium-ion batteries, which can “ignite, explode or spark,” according to the announcement on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. This poses “fire, explosion and burn” risks to the users.

“Ancheer has received six reports of incidents involving fire, explosions, or sparks, including four reports of burn injuries,” the announcement noted.

As such, those who are in possession of the recalled E-bikes are being advised to stop using them. They should instead contact the company to get a “free replacement battery and battery mount.”

The units affected by the recall are the ones that have the model number AM001907, which is not on the unit itself but may be found on the manual and bike packaging. The bikes are black in color and have a battery that’s shaped like a water bottle, distinguishing it “from other models.”

These were sold online from January 2016 to June this year via various websites, including Amazon, eBay and Walmart. The other websites it was available from are listed on the CPSC website.

Customers may contact the company at 888-661-1330 or via email at service@ancheer.shop.

    E-Bike Safety

The CPSC released a report Tuesday that found a striking 127% increase in Emergency Department visits related to micromobility devices from 2017 to 2021. E-bikes accounted for 11% of the injuries and 41% of the fatalities during the time period.

While e-bikes are fun and perhaps a more eco-friendly means to get around, there are some important safety reminders that users need to keep in mind.

For one thing, it’s important to wear safety gear such as a helmet and to use items such as lights, mirrors and warning devices that will help you navigate the roads safely and visibly along with other vehicles.

Of course, it’s important to be more aware of your speed and take the time to get familiar with the brakes of the unit. As an E-bike has “more speed and power” than a regular bike, slowing down to a halt would be a different experience than doing so on a regular bike.

And as one of the vehicles on the road, it’s important to follow the proper traffic rules. Make sure to drive on the right side of the road and pay attention to others navigating the road with you. This is especially important as drivers may not expect a bicycle-looking vehicle to reach the speeds that E-bikes can.
