At least seven persons were arrested in the Indian city of Gurugram, located just 26 miles from the national capital of New Delhi, on Monday after they were involved in a daredevil car stunt that killed a 50-year-old man.
The hair-raising incident was caught on camera.
Cops also seized two cars in connection with the incident, which took place at around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday outside a liquor shop, NDTV reported. Authorities suspect drunk driving was involved.
The video obtained by the outlet shows a white SUV hurtling toward a group of men at high speed and slamming them into a wall, before speeding away.
At least two victims were seen still kneeling on the ground while a few others struggled back to stand up. One man was crushed under the wheel of the car, cops said.
One of the two injured victims, Annu Kumar Gupta, who works at a liquor outlet close to where the accident occurred, filed a complaint at the local police station.
Gupta told police that he heard noises outside the store in the early hours of Sunday and stepped out with his friend Sunil to find out what happened. “The one driving Ertiga rammed into me and Sushil. There was another man on the road and he got killed in the accident,” Gupta said in the complaint, as per India TV.
Police said the main accused, who is believed to be a computer operator at the deputy commissioner’s office, had assaulted a few men earlier and was reportedly drunk at the time of the incident. They are resorting to the CCTV footage in the area to help identify the suspect who is on the lam.
“With the help of CCTV footage, efforts are on to identify the accused. We are also seeking information about the cars from the registration authority. The accused will be arrested soon,” Assistant Commissioner Manoj Kumar told India TV.
The unidentified deceased person was reportedly a daily wage worker. His body remains at a morgue as the investigation continues.
