InfoWars’ host Alex Jones faces defamation damages to the parents of the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims as jury selection for the trial began Monday. Jones had falsely asserted on his show that the 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 students between the ages of 6 and 7 years old were killed, was a hoax.
The long-delayed trial will take place in Austin, Texas, where Jones broadcasts his program. The trial will determine how much he owes the parents of eight Sandy Hook victims.
The parents and an FBI agent claim they endured death threats and harassment following Jones’ conspiracy theory. Jones has ignored court orders which delayed the trial for months, claiming he does not accept the charges although he has already been found liable.
“No, I don’t (accept) responsibility because I wasn’t trying to cause pain and suffering,” Jones said, according to the transcripts made public this month.
“They are being used and their children who can’t be brought back (are) being used to destroy the First Amendment,” he added.
Jones claimed in court that he is $20 million in debt. The legal team for the Sandy Hook parents claims that Jones has accumulated millions from donations and products he sells on his show.
