A man in India was beaten and thrown off a moving train on Friday after allegedly stealing a mobile phone in the Delhi-bound 14205 Ayodhya Cantt Old Delhi Express.

The pickpocket, reportedly in his early 20s, died after his head hit an overhead line pole near Tilhar railway station in Shahjahanpur.

A day after the incident, police found a 66-second video that appeared to be taken by a passenger traveling in the same compartment. The footage showed several people laughing while assaulting the man.

Also, in the viral clip, one of the passengers, identified as Narendra Dubey, could be seen abusing the man and pushing him out of the general compartment despite begging for his life.

According to the police, Sunday, a woman traveling on the train complained about her missing mobile phone near Shahjahanpur railway station.

The mobile phone was recovered from the man, believed to have gotten on the train from Lucknow. A group of people inside the train thrashed him for about half an hour and threw him out. His mangled body was later recovered on the track. The man reportedly had a deep wound on his head, and one of his legs was severed.

Dubey was arrested at Bareilly railway station by Government Railway Police (GRP) constables Satyaveer Singh, Lokendra Singh and Naushad Ali following a first information report (FIR) registered under the India Penal Code (IPC) section 302 (murder) on the complaint of one of them.

The station house officer (GRP-Bareilly) Vinod Kumar said, “The FIR has been registered in Bareilly. But the incident was reported in [the] Tilhar area of Shahjahanpur district. Hence, we’ve transferred the case to Tilhar police station.”

Meanwhile, the station house officer of Tilhar police station, Rajkumar Sharma, told The Times of India, “Autopsy report stated that he died of antemortem injuries. We have taken the viral video into consideration, and more names may be added to the list of accused following a thorough investigation. The accused man has been sent to jail.”

Sharma added, “Despite all our efforts, we are unable to identify the victim… We have shared his picture in nearby districts and expect to get some results soon.”

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death for plucking guava in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district in November.

According to the police, the man, identified as Om Prakash, was caught allegedly plucking guava from an orchard near the village, Deccan Herald reported.

Two persons looking after the orchard were arrested after repeatedly hitting the man with sticks and lathis; they also allegedly dumped the man’s body on a nearby field after he lost consciousness.

The family members of the victim searched for him after he did not return home. After hours of looking, they found him lying on a pool of blood in the field. He was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead.
