Amber Heard and Johnny Depp trended online Sunday for the wrong reasons after thousands of pages of documents filed in their defamation case were unsealed over the weekend.
The court documents, which were unsealed nearly two months after Depp won his defamation trial against his ex-wife, revealed information and claims that the legal teams of both stars attempted to submit into evidence but were rejected, Entertainment Tonight reported.
International Business Times could not independently verify the documents, but they were published online and verified by New York Post.
According to ET, the pre-trial court docs revealed that Depp’s team tried to submit nude photos of Heard into evidence and that Heard’s team tried to suggest Depp was taking erectile dysfunction medication, among many others.
The hashtags “AmberHeardIsAMonster” and “AmberHeardIsALiar” began trending on Twitter Sunday as a number of users and Depp fans slammed the “Aquaman” star over the documents’ revelations.
“If you were abused like [Amber Heard] said she was, WHY would you object to questions about where, how and when the abuse happened?? Shouldn’t she WANT to describe the abuse in detail to help her case? Unless it was a lie?” one Twitter user claimed, posting a screenshot of an alleged page from the unsealed documents.
“You can tell who the victim is in this picture. The unsealed documents that were released today revealed Amber Heard enjoyed abusing Johnny Depp,” a second person claimed.
“So Amber, her team and her stans cried about suppressed evidence. And now that everything is unsealed and the world confirms one more time she lied, they are still crying. All these unsealed documents are pure gold!” tweeted another person who also used both hashtags.
However, Depp was not spared from online criticism, with the hashtags “JohnnyDeppIsAWifeBeater” and “JohnnyDeppIsAnAbuser” also trending on Twitter at one point following the release of the pre-trial court documents.
One tweet under the hashtags read: “The lengths Johnny Depp went to in order to hide his abuse is amazing and scary.”
“Your time is over Depp, people are finally opening their eyes,” another person tweeted.
“This is terrifying. Johnny Depp’s global humiliation campaign against Amber never stops. This isn’t the future we want for our kids. And if this can happen to her, best believe it can happen to you too,” another wrote.
But Depp’s and Heard’s respective supporters also took to social media to defend the star they’re siding with.
Fans of the actress dubbed her a “hero” and a “survivor” and called for justice for Heard, while supporters of Depp said the actor “won again” after the documents were released.
In 2020, Depp lost his libel case against The Sun newspaper over its 2018 story that described him as a “wife-beater” during his marriage to Heard.
But on June 1, a Virginia jury awarded Depp more than $10 million in damages after finding that Heard defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed about surviving domestic abuse. Heard was also awarded $2 million after partially winning her countersuit against her ex.
Both sides filed their own notice of appeal against the outcome of the trial.
