Athletics Send Montas, Trivino To Yankees

The Oakland Athletics have cut ties with more players following reports that two more names have been dealt out.

The A’s reportedly sent pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees on Monday, August 1.

In return, Oakland will receive prospects JP Spears (RHP), Ken Waldichuk (LHP), Cooper Bowman (2B), and Luis Medina (RHP).

This also ends weeks of speculation regarding the future of the 29-year-old Montas as the deal was first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN.

This season, the Dominican had 19 starts with the Athletics, where he struck out 109 batters through 104 2/3 innings en route to a 3.18 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

He moved to Oakland after he was traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016.

It would be good to note that his contract remains under team control through next season.

On the other hand, Trivino was 1-6 this MLB season, holding a 6.47 ERA and 10 saves in 39 appearances.

It will be interesting how Waldichuk will figure over in Oakland, while Medina was ranked No. 10 in the Yankees’ system, followed by Sears at No. 20 and Bowman at No. 21.

The latest move of the Athletics comes after the team parted with other familiar names. That list included Matt Olson, Sean Manaea, Chris Bassett, and Matt Chapman.

“I feel great. I’m really excited about it,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in a report from MLB.com. “[Montas] is a great pitcher. There’s been rumors around him most of the first half of the season. I’m excited we were able to push through on a deal for him. His level of talent, especially with how he’s pitched the last couple of years, I’m just excited to get him into the mix.”

Although the Yankees appeared to have added big names, there was also some bad news on their end as starting pitcher Luis Severino was placed on the 60-day IL.

Severino has been sidelined since July 14 in what was initially described as a low-grade lat strain.

But it appears the injury is much more serious, with two-time All-Star being forced out for at least two months.
