Atlanta Public Schools students are coming together with city, school and law enforcement authorities on Thursday, Dec. 15, to make a public stance against gun violence.
The “Stand with Me Rally” is set for 6:30 p.m. at 130 Trinity Ave., at the intersection of Trinity and Central avenues. It is organized by APS students and the Atlanta Board of Education Student Advisory Council.
The rally is a call to action to city leaders and the Atlanta community in the wake of the fatal shootings of Zyion Charles, 12, and Cameron Jackson, 15, in Midtown over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Three teens have been arrested in the shooting.
APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta Board of Education members, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat and other dignitaries are expected to attend the rally.
Student Advisory Council Chairperson Eleanor Jones said holding the rally the day before students get out for the winter holiday break is to make a special plea to students to stay safe and be careful while not at school.
“Too often we are experiencing the youth of Atlanta become victims of gun violence either by death or to the prison system,” Jones said in a news release.
“Our youth, especially young black men, need to be protected, supported, and heard,” she said. “Tragedy has struck our community once again while out for a holiday break and it is movements like these that are designed to help us heal, but also create solutions that fix the problem.”
The rally will also include a citywide moment of silence to honor gun violence victims.
