Pat Cummins has produced a near carbon copy of his peach to remove Joe Root in the 2019 Ashes in dismissing West Indies skipper Kraigg Braithwaite to bring up his 200th Test wicket in style.

In 2019 Cummins had Rory Burns and Root out in consecutive balls at Old Trafford in the fourth Test of the Ashes series, with the then England skipper playing all around a stunning ball that hit the top off off-stump.

Fast-forward to day three of the first Test of the 2022 summer in Perth and Cummins came up with a near identical ball to dismiss to the West Indies captain for a gutsy 64.

“Bowls him, that’s what they wanted Australia and the skipper to skipper picks him up,” Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket.

“200 Test wickets now for Pat Cummins. What a beautiful delivery.”

Mark Waugh noted that Cummins had gone close to bringing up his milestone all morning after going past the outside edge on a number of occasions in some luckless spells from the Australian captain.

“He has been chasing that 200th wicket all day,” Waugh said.

“He has been past the bat and this time he relies on hitting the timber.

“The top of off-stump. That is the perfect delivery for a fastbowler. Great length and just straightens enough.

“That’s a really good ball to get past Braithwaite’s defence after being out there for 54 overs.

“He is happy about that. 200 Test wickets, what a milestone. It is a big one. Braithwaite, a really good, tough innings comes to an end. The skipper is gone for 64 and it is 2 for 159.

Cummins brought up his 200 milestone from just 44 matches at an average of 21.68, with seven five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6 for 23.

He becomes just the 19th Australian to reach 200 Test wickets, drawing level with former speed demon Jeff Thompson.

Cummins has the second best average by any Australian bowler with 200 wickets, behind only Glenn McGrath, who took 563 wickets at 21.64 from 124 matches.

At 29, Cummins is on track to chase McGrath’s mark for the most wickets by an Australian fastbowler provided he can stay injury free and play well into his 30’s.
