A recall has been announced for some of Banana Boats’ Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 product due to traces of benzene.
Products that have been affected have expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023 and April 2024. The lot numbers include 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF.
“An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene,” according to a voluntary nationwide recall from Edgewell Personal Care Company released by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday.
“While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the recall added.
The FDA says that benzene can potentially cause cancer.
“Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it potentially can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening,” the FDA said.
Banana Boat will offer a reimbursement to customers who purchased a recalled product. The company says to visit www.bananaboat.com for more information on how to receive a refund.
