MUMBAI: Stung by the team’s 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of England in the T20 World Cup semi-final in Australia last year, the BCCI‘s top brass, with an eye on the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in India this year, has swung into action right away.
On Sunday, January 1, the first day of 2023, Board secretary Jay Shah met India head coach Rahul Dravid, National Cricket Academy chairman VVS Laxman, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, outgoing chief selector Chetan Sharma for a ‘review-cum roadmap’ meeting at a five-star hotel here. BCCI president Roger Binny, who is currently holidaying in Australia, attended the meeting virtually.
As per a reliable source who attended the meeting, the BCCI has shortlisted 20 players who will be part of the 2023 World Cup. At the review meeting, the Board decided that these players will be rotated before the 2023 World Cup.
“It was a very constructive and fruitful meeting, in which we have reviewed the past performance and planned for the future events, including the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). We will give preference for international cricket while making sure the IPL is not diluted,” revealed a source, who attended the meeting.
In fact, in the build-up to this meeting, there were a series of meetings at the BCCI HQ here between the BCCI bigwigs. “On Saturday, there was a meeting attended by the BCCI office-bearers. In the coming days, you will see a lot of significant decisions being taken to improve the health of Indian cricket,” a source revealed to TOI.
“The issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were also discussed at length during the meeting along with the roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” the BCCI said in a release later.
NCA to coordinate with franchisees for player workload
Will we see the 20 Indian players who have been identified for the 2023 ODI World Cup being rotated in the IPL?
Well, that possibility can be read between the lines if one goes through the BCCI release. “Keeping in mind the men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,” says the release.
Injuries to India’s key pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar, which ruled them out of the T20 World Cup had triggered a debate on whether India’s star cricketers should be given the option of resting in the IPL. Former India coach-cim commentator Ravi Shastri had said last year that the BCCI must explore that option.
“With the volume of cricket that exists today, it’s extremely important that you get the balance right of how much a player plays. When should he be rested? And there, a (BCCI) president can play a big role. Tomorrow, if a cricketer, for the sake of playing for India, needs to be rested in the IPL for a certain number of games, so be it. Where, a (BCCI) president has to sit with the franchise and explain that he’s extremely important for India first, and then the franchise,” Shastri had emphasized.
Yo-Yo, Dexa tests mandatory criteria for selection
In another significant development, the BCCI, realising the declining fitness standards of the players- which seem to have directly affected Team India’s fielding- has emphasized on the much-debated Yo-Yo tests. The Yo-Yo tests, which were mandatory during the Virat Kohli-Shastri regime, are now back in favour as a major criteria for selection, clearly pointing to the fact that the team management will now not compromise on the fitness criteria.
“The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players,” the BCCI said in a statement after the meeting.
As per the Cleveland Clinic website: “A DEXA scan is an imaging test that measures bone density (strength). DEXA scan results can provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures (bone breaks). This test can also measure your body composition, such as body fat and muscle mass.”
Emerging players must play substantial season of domestic cricket
Interestingly, the BCCI release mentioned that “the emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team.” “It basically means that only those players who perform well in all the domestic tournaments, and not just in the IPL, will be considered for selection. This decision has been taken since we’ve noticed that some players are prioritising playing in the IPL over other domestic tournaments,” a source said.
    CAC hold first meeting
Meanwhile, the BCCI’s newly-formed Cricket Advisory Committee, which includes Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshna Naik, held its first meeting a couple of days back here to pick the new selection committee. Venkatesh Prasad, Sridharan Sharath (South Zone), Mukund Parmar & Salil Ankola (West Zone), Reetinder Singh Sodhi (North Zone), Shiv Sundar Das (East Zone) and Rizwan Shamshad (Central) are all emerging as the favourites in the race.
