Vasily Lomachenko has beaten Jamaine Ortiz in a gruelling fight that went the distance at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Lomachenko, making his return to the ring seven months after joining Ukraine’s war against Russia, beat Ortiz by unanimous decision, 115-113, 116-112, 117-111.
Lomachenko will now likely take on undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney in a unification bout.
Haney watched on from ringside and said after the fight: “I think it wasn’t the best performance … but congratulations. Hopefully we can get it on.”

In reply, Lomachenko said: “I’m ready.”
“I don’t care about the place. Absolutely. I will be ready for any of his conditions. Let me explain. He’s undisputed champion. He is the A-side. I need this moment more than he does.
“I’m happy, I’m happy to be back in the ring and make this great show. He is a tough fighter, he is a good fighter.”
