There is a lot of confusion around the term hemp oil, most commonly is the belief that it is the same as CBD oil, but it isn’t, and it can make a big difference if you purchase the wrong product, plus, you could really be wasting your money on one of these. So let’s discuss the differences between CBD oil vs hemp seed oil. But first, let’s learn what hemp is.

    What is Hemp

Hemp comes from hemp plants which are a relative of marijuana plants, as they both come from the cannabis family. Hemp, however, does not produce the high amounts of THC that marijuana does. Marijuana comes from the cannabis sativa plant, and which has high concentration of THC. Cannabis sativa seed oil will also have a high concentration of THC. The hemp used to formulate CBD, hemp extract, and hempseed oil is called industrial hemp.

Back in 2018, the US government passed the 2018 Farm Bill, an act that legalized the cultivation, possession, and sales of the hemp plant and hemp-derived products. The most significant caveat here, though, was the THC levels. In order to legally grow hemp, the plant could not contain THC levels any higher than 0.3%. At the federal level of 0.3%, the psychoactivity level is very low. If the plant has THC levels any higher than that, it is considered cannabis plant, or marijuana plant, and may be illegal to grow, process, and distribute depending on what state you live in.

    Hemp oil vs CBD oil

Now, let’s talk about hemp seed oil vs. CBD oil.

CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. CBD oil is formulated from the extract of the whole plant, including the leaves, flowers, and stems. This extract may contain other cannabinoids in addition to the CBD such as CBN or CBG. CBD is know for it’s health benefits, and people are using it for many different conditions such as pain relief, stress relief, or as beauty products. Occasionally a product may be labeled “hemp CBD oil”.

Hemp seed oil is formulated from the seeds of the hemp plant only. It does not contain any other parts of the hemp plant. To create hemp oil, the hemp seeds from the plant are essentially squeezed and the oils collected. There are some nutritional benefits to hemp seed oil, which is why you primarily see it being used similarly to olive oil. In fact, cooking with hemp seed oil is quite common and has been for a relatively long time! Hemp seed oil does contain essential fatty acids which is good for heart health, but it does not contain any cannabinoids.

When you boil it down, CBD oil is much more beneficial to our internal functions and the different products can be used in myriad ways. Hemp seed oil is much less versatile, and it’s cherished for its nutritional properties, especially when added to meals. In fact, hemp seeds themselves are often ingredients in healthy foods because of the seeds’ dietary benefits.

A product labeled “hemp oil” or “hemp extract oil” probably contains only hemp seed oil, so it is alway important to review the label on the bottle or jar to know what you are getting.

    Buyer Beware

There are unscrupulous shops and health food stores that will market hemp oil products to look like CBD products, and thus jack up the price. You might see hemp lotions in your pharmacy, grocery store, or big box store and think you are getting a CBD oil product, but end up with only hemp oil. Additionally, real CBD oil is not permitted to be sold on Amazon at this time, so any hemp products listed there will be composed of only hemp seed oil.

Different Types of CBD Oil On The Market

To help you get even more familiar with CBD oils, let’s also talk a little bit about the different types of CBD oils you’ll find on the market. Currently, there are three main varieties of CBD oils available to everyday customers.

    Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

One of the most common types of CBD oil you’ll find nowadays is full-spectrum CBD. Full spectrum CBD oil means that the oil contains the full plant extract of hemp plant components. So, not only do these CBD products contain varying cannabinoid levels, but they also contain other minor cannabinoids and terpenes too. Full spectrum products will contain some amount of THC, the legal limit is .3%. This may cause some who use full spectrum products to fail a drug test.

It is believed that cannabinoids work best synergistically to create an entourage effect .

    Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad spectrum CBD oil is quite similar to full-spectrum in the sense that they both contain terpenes and other lesser-known cannabinoids. The main difference is that broad-spectrum CBD products don’t contain any THC whatsoever. While the oils may have cannabinoids like CBN and CBG, they will not have any THC compounds. This is an attractive option for those who want the experience of hemp’s synergistic entourage effects, without the presence of THC.

    CBD Isolate

Finally, you may also come across a type classified as CBD isolate. This type of CBD oil does not contain any other cannabinoids or terpenes, just pure CBD oil, and that’s all. Products like these can be an excellent option for those who simply want to experience the benefits of CBD without any other components. Sometimes, products like they may not be as strong as full or broad-spectrum CBD oils, but they still produce beneficial effects that many people enjoy.

    How CBD works

CBD works directly with the bodies endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD, and other cannabinoids will bind to various receptors within the ECS to help support a health system, and keep the body in balance. The chemical compound CBD may also directly affect the release of dopamine, the feel good hormone.
