A company is recalling its chicken salad products because they may contain an undeclared allergen. The products were sold in multiple states.
The voluntary recall affects Albertsons Companies’ ReadyMeals Chicken Salad Quad and Chicken Salad Sandwich Club Tray that may contain undeclared cashews, an announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website read.
The tree nut, which is an allergen, is not on the ingredients list. The company found out about the issue after receiving a report of a customer’s adverse reaction.
“Consumers who have allergies or severe sensitivities to tree nuts (cashews) run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products and are urged not to consume these items,” the company noted. “These consumers should discard the products or return them to their local store for a full refund.”
Tree nut allergies are among the most common food allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI). Along with peanuts and shellfish, tree nuts are also among the food allergens that are “most often linked” to anaphylaxis, which is a “potentially life-threatening reaction” that can send the body into shock.
“Allergies from cashews are often linked to severe and even fatal complications,” noted Healthline. “It’s important to understand the symptoms and risk factors of this allergy.”
While symptoms typically occur “within seconds” after being exposed to the allergen, in some cases, although they are “rare,” they may start to occur hours later. Someone who is experiencing anaphylaxis should immediately receive medical care.
The ReadyMeals Chicken Salad Quad were sold in 12-oz clear plastic containers with four compartments and had the UPC code 21352400000. The Chicken Salad Sandwich Club 18-inch Tray had the UPC 29615900000 and the products were packed in black trays of 16 sandwiches.
Both products’ “sell thru” date expires Thursday.” Photos of the packaging are available on both the FDA and company websites.
