A business administration teacher at the University of West Georgia has been charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Richard Sigman, 47, allegedly shot and killed 18-year-old Anna Jones, an incoming freshman, early Saturday in Carrollton, Georgia. The shooting took place at a courthouse parking deck at about 12:30 a.m. and while Jones was in a parked vehicle. Police said that Jones’ friends drove her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Sigman was charged with three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to the Carrollton Police Department.

Police arrested Sigman shortly have after the shooting.

A judge denied bond to Sigman, who appeared in court in a wheelchair and with a bruised forehead.

The University of West Georgia said the school had fired Sigman.

Police said that Sigman had been involved in a verbal altercation at a pizza restaurant with a man, who later alerted security about the incident. Security reportedly said that Sigman had a weapon and was told to leave.

Sigman allegedly threatened a parking deck security guard and then later shot at Jones. It is unclear if Sigman knew Jones.

“On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends,” University of West Georgia President Dr. Brendan Kelly said in a statement.

“We know this news is difficult to process and affects many members of our university community. We ask that you keep Anna’s family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy in your thoughts during this tremendously difficult time,” the statement read.
