Dan Hannebery has reportedly attracted interest from Gold Coast as the midfielder weighs up a retirement backflip and a move to a third AFL club.

Hannebery announced his retirement at the end of this season after a 226-game career, with the majority of them coming at Sydney over his 10-year stint.

SEN’s Sam Edmund has reported the 31-year-old is considering an AFL return, which would come at the Suns during the delisted free agency window, which opens next Thursday.

The Suns enjoyed great success this season in bringing in a ‘retired’ veteran, with ex-Carlton forward Levi Casboult kicking 35 goals in a career-best year.

Hannebery would add to the Suns’ veteran stocks as the club looks to lock in the first finals series in their history come 2023.

The three-time All-Australian managed just 18 games across four seasons for the Saints, with injury hampering his time there.

Still, Hannebery has shown impressive spurts of form when able to take to the field.

He played three of the last four games of the 2022 season, with his final game earning him three Brownlow Medal votes.

Following the season, Hannebery told Channel Nine in mid-September he was weighing up his future.

“To be honest, I’m not too sure. It’s been a tough four years, both mentally and physically,” he said.

“We put a lot of work in, but I felt we got it right at the end there. I haven’t really spoken too much to my manager about it or thought too much about it.”

He added: “I’m enjoying retirement, albeit for three weeks but we’ll see how we go. I’m trying not to blow out too much. I’ve been for a few runs so far and I feel okay.

“I’d have to think about it, but at this stage, the body feels pretty good.

“Diplomatically, I’ll say that I’m retired for the moment.”
