Daniel Ricciardo, who lost his McLaren seat this year, has returned to Red Bull as third driver for 2023.
A return to the team where he won seven Grands Prix had long been rumoured, but was made official by the team on Wednesday.
The team said that Ricciardo’s role will see him primarily used to help with development and in commercial activities, and not as a reserve driver.

“Bringing a wealth of experience and character, Daniel will assist the team with testing and Sim work, as well as commercial activity,” the Red Bull announcement read.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner added: “In his role as test and third driver, Daniel will give us the chance to diversify, assisting in the development of the car, aiding the team with his experience and knowledge of what it takes to succeed in F1.
“We’re very pleased to be working with Daniel again and look forward to everything he will bring to the team in 2023.”
The Australian made his Formula One debut for the short-lived HRT team, in 2011 before joining Red Bull feeder squad Toro Rosso the following year.
He moved up to Red Bull in 2014 and stayed five seasons winning seven races and finishing third in the driver standings twice.
“The smile says it all. I’m truly excited to be coming back home to Oracle Red Bull Racing,” Ricciardo said. “I already have so many fond memories of my time here.
“For me personally, the ability to contribute to and be surrounded by the best team in F1 is hugely appealing, whilst also giving me some time to recharge and refocus. I can’t wait to be with the team and support with simulator work, testing sessions and commercial activities. Let’s go!”
Last week, Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff confirmed they had held talks with Ricciardo over the third driver role but that the Australian was talking to other teams.
After leaving Red Bull, Ricciardo raced two seasons with Renault and two with McLaren, winning the Italian Grand Prix in 2021.
