Los Angeles — A Delta Air Lines flight blew at least two tires while landing at the Los Angeles International Airport.
No injuries were reported during the incident, which led to runways being temporarily shut down for hours, officials said.
Delta Flight 515 took off from Atlanta and was landing at its destination when the tires burst just before 1:15 p.m., CBS News reported.
The pilot reported that the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue, as per the Los Angeles International Airport.
The aircraft “came to rest on the taxi,” Delta said in a statement addressing the incident. The exact cause was not revealed, AP News reported.
The incident forced airport officials to close two runways for several hours at LAX, which is one of the busiest airports in the country. The plane remained on the tarmac with its passengers still inside while checks were conducted while the Los Angeles Fire Department crews were called to the scene.
Passengers were eventually allowed to exit the aircraft and were transported in vehicles to the terminal.
“As a precaution, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the aircraft. No injuries were reported and passengers were taken by an airport shuttle to the terminal to be accommodated by the airline,” the airport said in a statement, as quoted by WSB-TV.
The runways were eventually reopened for use after the plane was towed away.
Photos shared on social media showed the aircraft’s shredded tears.
“Thanks to the flight crews’ handling during the landing process, Delta flight 515 operating from Atlanta arrived safely and came to rest on the taxi way after a possible issue with some of its tires at Los Angeles International Airport,” a Delta spokesperson reportedly said. “… We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
One passenger, Sara Margarett, aboard the Delta flight had posted a series of tweets about the incident.
“Everything is cool once we finally get in the air after being delayed an hour. OR SO WE THOUGHT,” Margarett wrote. “We start our short final onto the runway. We touchdown (maybe a little fast) when all of a sudden POW BAM right landing gear fumbles the bag and we pop 2 tires on the right.”
“Everyone freaks out and we skidded to a stop somewhere between hell and a runway,” she added.
Margarett said a maintenance crew arrived and tried to fix the tires.
“So after ONE HOUR they decide to get all the humans off the plane and take them inside,” she added.
