A series of dog treats from Stormberg Foods has been recalled over potential Salmonella contamination, which endangered pets that have consumed the contaminated treats, as well as humans who have handled the products.

The affected dog treats include the company’s Beg & Barker Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treats (UPC 8 50025 54628 7), Billo’s Best Friend Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treats (UPC 8 50025 54611 9), and Green Coast Pets Chicken Crisps Dog Treats (UPC 8 50025 54610 2).

The dog treats were distributed from June 8, 2022 to June 22, 2022 nationwide to retailers and online. They were packaged in branded plastic bags and are labeled with an expiration date of June 2, 2023 to June 23, 2023.

According to Stormberg Foods, on July 6, the company was notified by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services that a sample of its dog treat products had tested positive for Salmonella.

Stormberg said it is continuing its investigation into the cause of the Salmonella contamination, along with the NCDA & CS. No illnesses have been reported to the company as a result of the recalled dog treats.

Salmonella can impact pets that have consumed the contaminated products and the humans who have handled the same products, especially if they don’t thoroughly wash their hands or exposed surfaces.

Salmonella infections in humans can include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare instances, it can result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Pets that have been exposed to Salmonella may display symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. They may also experience a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled dog treats or have ill pets should contact the company via email at stormbergship@gmail.com immediately with product information for a return or disposal information. Questions can also be directed to Stormberg Foods’ customer service department at 919-947-6011, Monday through Friday, from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET.

If Salmonella illness symptoms appear after coming in contact with the recalled dog treats, consumers should contact their healthcare provider for treatment. Infected pets should see a veterinarian.
