Billionaire businessman Elon Musk on Thursday posted a lengthy Twitter message about his “motivation in acquiring Twitter.”

Musk confirmed much of the “speculation” that has been going around about his intentions is untrue, and said his true goal is to “help humanity.”

Musk is set to close the $44 billion deal with Twitter on Friday and has plans to take the company private.

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” Musk said in the Twitter post.

“I didn’t do it to make money,” he said of the pending acquisition. “I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love.”

Musk also insisted in the post that far-right wing and far-left wing content has gone too far on Twitter. He said that under him Twitter will not be a “free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences.”

“There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far-right wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society,” Musk added.

Musk offered to buy Twitter on April 14 after U.S. regulators said someone should “monitor” his tweets.

The acquisition has run into various roadblocks. Musk had tried to back out of the deal and a legal battle has ensued.
