Manchester United is in disarray after finishing sixth last season – their worst result of the Premier League era – and starting the new campaign with a pair of embarrassing losses.
Their owners, the American Glazer family who also own NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are broadly hated in Manchester for their (mis)management of the team since a takeover in 2005.
The Glazers have refused to sell the club on multiple occasions in the past, but the dire situation at Old Trafford could finally convince them to change their mind – as could Musk’s billions.

Musk this week sold $US6.9 billion (around $10bn AUD) of Tesla stock, which would give him more than enough cash to meet the Glazers’ valuation last year of $US4bn for the club.
However, Musk has a long history of trolling fans on Twitter – including plenty of previous jokes about buying companies.
He is currently attempting to back out of a US$44billion deal to buy Twitter.
