FDA Issues Warning Over Honey Products Containing Viagra, Cialis Drugs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to four companies that illegally sold honey-based products that were found to contain active ingredients from sexual enhancement drugs Viagra and Cialis.

According to the agency, the products can pose a significant health risk to consumers as the drug ingredients were not listed on the labels.

“Tainted honey-based products like these are dangerous because consumers are likely unaware of the risks associated with the hidden prescription drug ingredients in these products and how they may interact with other drugs and supplements they may take,” FDA Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs Judy McMeekin said in a statement.

According to the FDA’s notice, when combined with nitrates, which are used to treat diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, Viagra and Cialis ingredients can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

“Products marketed with unidentified ingredients may be dangerous and, in some cases, deadly to consumers. We encourage consumers to remain vigilant when shopping online or in stores to avoid purchasing products that put their health at risk, and instead seek effective, FDA-approved treatments,” McMeekin said.

While Viagra and Cialis are FDA approved for men to treat erectile dysfunction, they are restricted to use under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider, the agency said.

The FDA has sent warning letters to four companies – US Royal Honey, MKS Enterprise, Shopaax.com, and 1am USA Incorporated dba Pleasure Products USA – about their violations, which the agency said made unauthorized claims with their honey-based products.

The products from the four companies are sold for sexual enhancement online as well as in retail stores. The products were not identified by the FDA but were said to be honey, dietary supplements, and unapproved new drugs.

The companies have 15 days to respond to the FDA’s warning letter or face legal action which can include product seizure and injunction.
