A one-time rising Sydney Swans star who was banned from the AFL for attacking his ex-partner is one of almost 900 players to nominate for the upcoming Draft.

Elijah Taylor is hoping to revive his career almost two years after the AFL banned the then-19-year-old from taking part in the 2021 season and ruled him out of any State competitions until June 2021.

Taylor had pleaded guilty to attacking his former partner and whipping her with his belt during a dispute in Perth in 2020.

He was sacked by the Swans as a result of those charges.

Taylor also pleaded guilty to a separate domestic incident at an East Perth apartment in January 2022, where he failed to follow a police order and was charged with trespass.

AFL executive general manager Andrew Dillon said back in 2021 that while the sport “strongly condemned” Taylor’s actions, the door was not closed on his football career.

“Violence against women in any form is abhorrent and we strongly condemn it,” Mr Dillon said.

“Our view is clear and unequivocal – violence against women is never okay in any circumstance – ever.

“There is a pathway for Mr Taylor’s return to football in time, reflecting his contrition and the ongoing positive effects of his participation in a football program.”

Now after playing WAFL for East Perth this season, Taylor has opted to nominate for the AFL Draft.

He’s one of the 125 WAFL players to nominate, alongside 214 from the NAB League, 184 from the VFL and 126 from the SANFL.

Taylor isn’t the only former AFL player to nominate for next week’s draft, with ex-Roos Jed Anderson and Jared Polec putting their hand up for a new club.

Another controversial player, Sydney Stack, has nominated, alongside Mitch Wallis, Jake Aarts, Callum Brown, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Connor Blakeley, ex-Magpies’ the Brown brothers and Nakia Cockatoo.

Stack spent the 2020 Christmas behind bars after his arrest for breaching WA’s Covid laws when police arrived to break up a street fight in entertainment hotspot Northbridge.
