Uncertainty looms about the future of Jimmy Garoppolo, who is expected to be back in action by mid-August.
On paper, the two-time Super Bowl champion is still technically with the San Francisco 49ers.
Given his situation and the fact that the team is anticipated to transition to Trey Lance as their new play-caller, the best to expect is to see Garoppolo as the team’s backup quarterback for the coming NFL season.
This is the scenario that awaits given that there is no telling how well Garoppolo has recuperated from his offseason shoulder surgery.
This should get more clarity once the Niners open training camp.
However, there is also a chance that Garoppolo could find a new home in the next couple of weeks.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Garoppolo’s agent has been permitted to seek a trade.
The 30-year-old is due a $24.2 million base salary this season, meaning any deal team who would take a chance on him would likely end up with reduced figures.
This is seen as the reason why Garoppolo’s agent will need to get involved.
There is no telling who among the NFL teams would take a gamble on the Illinois native.
His health is a big question mark with the proper assessment most likely known only when Garoppolo takes the field.
The best to expect is seeing Garoppolo playing as a backup in the early goings for the Niners as this would give him time to align himself once more to see if can still play at the same competitive level.
Seeing Garoppolo do the same in another team is also possible.
But considering the money involved in taking him in, most NFL teams may opt to pass or reconsider Garoppolo if he proves to be efficient as before.
The understanding is that Garoppolo will eventually leave San Francisco and get traded to another NFL team.
For now, he is likely to remain with the Niners in the early part of the season.
If he shows rust and fails to make a good impression, the likely scenario is seeing the two-time Super Bowl champion staying on with the 49ers until his deal runs out.
