After ending 2021 with six consecutive losses, the New York Giants will attempt to get the 2022 NFL preseason off to a strong start when they visit the New England Patriots on Thursday. New York, which dropped a 22-20 decision to New England last preseason, endured its fifth straight losing campaign after it went 4-13 last year. The Patriots began the Mac Jones era with a 10-7 mark and a playoff appearance last season after experiencing their first sub-.500 record (7-9) since going 5-11 in 2000. The Giants posted a 31-29 victory in their last preseason visit to New England in 2019.

Kickoff from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. New York is a 1.5-point favorite in the latest Giants vs. Patriots odds at Caesars Sportsbook, while the Over-Under for total points scored is 34. Before locking in any Patriots vs. Giants picks or 2022 NFL preseason predictions, make sure you check out what SportsLine NFL expert R.J. White has to say.

Over the past seven years, White – a CBS Sports fantasy and gambling editor – has gone 329-250-21 (56.8 percent) in the world’s most prestigious football handicapping competition, the Las Vegas SuperContest. He also is SportsLine’s No. 1 NFL expert, going 445-378-24 on his against-the-spread NFL picks from 2017-21, returning $2,542 to $100 players.

In addition, White has gone 29-17 on his last 46 picks involving the Giants, returning $1,004. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, White has locked in on Giants vs. Patriots from every angle and released a confident against-the-spread pick for Thursday’s game. You can visit SportsLine now to see White’s picks and analysis. Here are several NFL odds and trends for Patriots vs. Giants:

    Why the Giants can cover

New York finished last in the NFC in scoring in 2021 by a large margin, scoring 46 fewer points than 15th-place Carolina (304). The offense figures to be improved this year after the Giants brought in Brian Daboll, who was Buffalo’s offensive coordinator from 2018-21, as their head coach. They also brought in Mike Kafka, Kansas City’s quarterbacks coach over the same time period, as OC. New York is hoping Kafka, who helped in the ascent of former NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, can do the same for Daniel Jones.

Kafka will call plays on Thursday, with Tyrod Taylor and Davis Webb expected to be under center. The 33-year-old Taylor has made 53 regular-season starts in the NFL, including six for Houston last season, and was a Pro-Bowler in 2015 after recording career-highs of 3,053 passing yards and 20 touchdown tosses with Buffalo. Webb, who was a third-round pick of the Giants in 2017, is familiar with Daboll, as he made his NFL regular-season debut with Buffalo last season but has yet to throw a pass in the league.

    Why the Patriots can cover

Mac Jones is coming off a solid rookie season but reportedly looked out of sync during the first two weeks of practice and could get playing time against New York. Veteran Brian Hoyer, who is in third stint with the Patriots, missed practice time due to illness, so it’s likely that plenty of snaps will come his way. The 36-year-old appeared in five games for New England last year, going 9-for-11 for 227 yards and a touchdown.

Bailey Zappe will get his first taste of the NFL after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old spent three seasons at Houston Baptist before transferring to Western Kentucky, where he completed 69.2 percent of his passes last year and set FBS records with 5,967 yards and 62 TDs. New England’s QBs will often be looking in the direction of 2022 second-round pick Tyquan Thornton, who hauled in 62 passes for 948 yards and 10 scores at Baylor last year and was the fastest receiver at the 2022 NFL Combine, as he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds.

How to make Giants vs. Patriots picks

White has analyzed this matchup and while we can tell you he’s leaning Under on the point total, he has discovered a critical X-factor that has him jumping all over one side of the spread. He’s only sharing what it is, and which side to back, at SportsLine.

Who wins Patriots vs. Giants on Thursday? And which critical X-factor makes one side of the spread a must-back? Visit SportsLine now to see R.J. White’s Giants vs. Patriots picks, all from the NFL expert who’s 29-17 on his last 46 picks involving New York, and find out.
