Herschel Walker, the Republican nominee for Senate in Georgia, has acknowledged that he has two more children he had not previously mentioned publicly. It is the second time this week that Walker has admitted to having a child with whom he is not in contact.
The Daily Beast reported Thursday that the former National Football League player is the father of a 13-year son, who was born to a woman in Texas. Walker also admitted he has a daughter, who was born when he attended the University of Georgia from 1980 to 1982.
On Tuesday, the Daily Beast revealed that Walker was the father of a 10-year-old who he was not involved in raising. The report also noted that the 13-year-old son has appeared in social media images together with Walker at various points.
Walker, 60, has been public with his 22-year-old son Christian, who he raised with ex-wife Cindy DeAngelis Grossman. Grossman in court filings had accused Walker of “physically abusive and extremely threatening behavior.”
Walker has railed against what he once called a “major, major problem” of fatherless households in the Black community and he has continued to speak about this as a candidate.
Walker and his campaign have firmly denied that he was hiding his children. In a statement to the Daily Beast, Walker admitted to having “four children” and insisted that they were not “undisclosed.” Instead, Walker said he wanted to shield his family from political attention.
“I’ve never denied my children, I confirmed this when I was appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, I just chose not to use them as props to win a political campaign,” said Walker in his statement. “I can take the heat, that’s politics, but leave my kids alone.”
The statement seems to contradict a previous campaign statement that Walker only had one child out of wedlock.
“Herschel had a child years ago when he wasn’t married. He’s supported the child and continues to do so. He’s proud of his children. To suggest that Herschel is ‘hiding’ the child because he hasn’t used him in his political campaign is offensive and absurd,” Scott Paradise, Walker’s campaign manager, said Tuesday in a statement.
The revelations about Walker’s children come as he is set to face incumbent Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga.
Warnock won a special election in January 2021 to fill the seat of retired Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson.
Paradise alleged that the focus on Walker’s family was part of a “nasty mudslinging campaign” encouraged by Warnock, who he said has his own family problems to sort out.
Warnock is in a custody battle with his ex-wife over their two children as well as a lawsuit to increase the amount of the senator’s child support payments.
