Tiantian Kullander, the co-founder of Hong Kong-based digital asset company, Amber, died on Nov. 23 at the age of 30.

Kullander is the second cryptocurrency wizard to have died this year. His death comes months after Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu drowned on June 23.

Kullander “passed away unexpectedly in his sleep,” Amber said in a statement on its website Friday. “He led by example with his intellect, generosity, humility, diligence and creativity.”

The exact reason for his death was not revealed.

“TT,” as he was lovingly known, is survived by a wife and son. While followers of the crypto universe mourn TT’s death along with his family, friends, and acquaintances, here’s a spotlight on the young visionary’s achievements, and the legacy he leaves behind.

    Amber Group’s “pillar of success”

Kullander banded with ex-finance professionals, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley alumni, to form the Amber Group, which hit a $3 billion valuation in February 2022.

The company is owned by Kullander, Michael Wu, Wayne Huo, Tony He, and Luke Li. They all previously worked on Morgan Stanley’s fixed-income trading floor before making the switch to entrepreneurship.

In the tribute to Kullander, the company said he was “instrumental to the founding of Amber and a pillar of our success. He put his heart and soul into the company, in every stage of its growth.”

    Net worth

While the individual net worth of Kullander and his partners hasn’t been made public, Amber Group was valued at a staggering $3 billion, seven months after its value was estimated at $1 billion, Forbes reported. The company was reportedly considering an initial public offering in the U.S. in 2023.

The company, which had recently shifted base to Singapore, revealed earlier this month they were in the process of raising around $100 million, The Block reported.

    Forbes 30-under-30

TT along with Tony and Wayne featured on Forbes’ 30 under 30 round-up in 2019 alongside other Banking and Fintech superstars.

Kullander also participated in trading competitions throughout his career, beginning as early as 2010, and landed 1st place the following year issued by BP Oil Trading.

    Amber Group’s full statement

“It is with the deepest sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of our friend and co-founder, Tiantian Kullander, who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on November 23, 2022.

Tiantian (or “TT”, as he was lovingly known) was instrumental to the founding of Amber and a pillar of our success. He put his heart and soul into the company, in every stage of its growth. He led by example with his intellect, generosity, humility, diligence and creativity.

TT was a respected thought leader and widely recognized as a pioneer for the industry. His depth of knowledge, his willingness to collaborate and his desire to always help others benefited countless start-ups and individuals. His insights and creativity inspired many projects, people and communities.

Besides co-founding Amber and building it into a multi-billion fintech unicorn, TT sat on the Board of Fnatic (one of the world’s most successful e-sports organizations) and founded KeeperDAO (the first on-chain liquidity underwriter) before giving it back to its community.

We lost a great partner and a true friend in TT and words cannot express our sorrow at this time. TT’s legacy will live on and we will work even harder to make Amber the category-defining leader of our industry, as this was TT’s ambition and dream.

TT was a devoted husband, a loving father and a fierce friend. His passing is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He is survived by his wife and their beloved son. We kindly request that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
