Peloton has extended its refund period for the recalled Peloton Tread+ until November 2023, the company and regulators announced Tuesday.

The high-end treadmill was recalled in May 2021 after the death of a child and dozens of customers reported injuries after falling and being pulled and pinned under the rear roller. The Tread+ sold for $4,295 and it was one of the most expensive treadmills on the market. Peloton targeted avid runners and marathon athletes and sold 125,000 of the machines.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it received 72 reports, including 29 involving children, of broken bones, cuts and bruises. Peloton initially took no action after the commission the month before the recall issued an “urgent warning” to customers to stop using the treadmill and requested that the machines be taken off the retail market.

Regulators also recalled the Peloton Tred at the same time because its touchscreen was not securely attached to the machine. The company has since fixed that problem and the treadmill is available on the Peloton website for $3,495.

How to get your money back –

Peloton will issue full refunds for returns or will move the treadmill to a more secure room. Customers that do not request a refund before Nov. 6, 2023, will be eligible for a partial refund.

Peloton is also offering software updates for customers who request refunds and movement of their Tread+ to more secure locations. The software update would lock the machine after each use and require users to enter a 4-digit code to activate the machine for added security. Peloton urges customers who keep their Tread+ not to use the device until the software update is installed.

Owners of second-hand Tread+ units are also eligible for full refunds and returns. Peloton will not move Tread+ devices to new homes or locations, only to other rooms in the current home. Tread+ users can fill out a form online and are given three choices: full refund and return, free repair when available or relocation of the machine to a safer room.
