India beat New Zealand by 90 runs in the third and final ODI against New Zealand at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Tuesday, January 24. The Men in Blue whitewashed the opposition for the second time in a three-match ODI series at home in 2023. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that these pitches are not ideal for cricket with the ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year.
Team India set a mammoth target of 386 runs, with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill both scoring centuries and a 212-run partnership for the first wicket. The Kiwis made a brilliant comeback with the ball and restricted India to 385 runs. Devon Conway scored a brilliant century of 138 off 100 balls to keep hope alive in the match. Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur took three wickets and bowled out the opponent for 295 runs.

These Pitches Are Not Great For Cricket – Aakash Chopra
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra expressed his disappointment over the batting tracks provided in recent times and said that matches were not interesting to watch. The former Indian opener feels that high-scoring matches are not good for the game, especially with the World Cup in October-November.
“If ODI cricket is played on such pitches, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are going to hit a lot. Usually both will hit in the same match or else at least one will definitely hit. The day both of them get out early, Kohli will destroy you. These pitches are not great for cricket,” Aakash Chopra said.
“If you want only hitting, you will get more such pitches. I personally feel it is not a good thing because when the World Cup happens here, 400 runs will be scored easily. 400 runs is not a great game,” he added.

The Matches Might Not Be That Interesting – Aakash Chopra
Chopra believes that India will start as favourites in the mega event, but the matches may not be interesting as scores in three of the last six matches have been close to 400.
“Once in a while it is okay, but if you see the last six matches, three each against Sri Lanka and New Zealand – Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and then here – you are reaching close to 400. The ODI World Cup will happen for sure, India will start as runaway favourites, but the matches might not be that interesting.”
Following the ODI series, India will take on New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, on Friday, January 27. Hardik Pandya will lead the side in the shorter format, with Suryakumar Yadav serving as his deputy in the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul.
