Australia will tour India for a four-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in 2023, with the first match starting in Nagpur on February 9. Legendary cricketer Ian Chappell believes that the visitors will fancy their chances of outplaying the mighty Indian team on their home soil. Chappell said that India’s top-order batsmen need to show their dominance over Nathan Lyon to put pressure on Australia.
The Aussies last played Test cricket in India in February 2017 and beat the hosts by 333 runs in the first Test in Pune, but lost the series 2-1. The biggest challenge for the Australian team is to defeat the Indian team at their home ground in the Test series, and they will look to repeat their feat from 2004, when they won the series 2-1 on Indian soil. Notably, the Men in Blue haven’t lost a home Test series since 2012.

In his column for ESPN Cricinfo, Ian Chappell stated that Indian batters including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara have a big challenge ahead of them as they have to face Nathan Lyon. Chappell believes that India can beat the visitors in the Test series if the home team can quiet Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon.
“One of the main tasks for Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara will be to establish mental superiority over Lyon. If Australia can’t rely on Lyon claiming regular wickets at an acceptable rate, their bowling will then depend greatly on the ‘big three,” Chappell said.
Vice-captain Steve Smith is the only batter in the current Australian side to have an average of more than 30 against the Rohit Sharma-led side in India. Lyon played seven Test matches in India and took 34 wickets at an average of 30.58.
The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will take place in Nagpur on February 9. The second test will be held in Delhi (February 17–21), the third in Dharamsala (March 1–5), and the fourth in Ahmedabad (March 9-13).
