Prince Harry has maintained a close bond with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth even after he stepped back from royal duties, according to a report.
While he and his wife Meghan Markle have been rumored to be at odds with the royal family since announcing their decision to step back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020, the Duke of Sussex has remained close to the 96-year-old monarch, People reported.
Prince Harry keeps the Queen updated on his life in California and his children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, via video calls, according to the outlet. Her Majesty met both children when the Sussexes traveled to the U.K. earlier this month for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth has had to find a balance between sympathy for the Sussexes and firmness in favor of her role.
“One thing about the Queen is she has to manage being a grandmother but also how it affects the wider institution,” an unnamed royal source told People.
Prince Harry previously showed off his close bond with his grandmother when he invited her to join him for a playful video to tout the Invictus Games in 2016.
In the skit, the prince showed the Queen a video of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama teasing that the U.S. was going to win big at the Paralympic-style games. One of the servicemen surrounding the Obamas then said “Boom” to underscore the boast.
In response, Queen Elizabeth shrugged her shoulders and said, “Boom, really? Please.”
“If Harry asks, the Queen would say yes— as she adores him,” an unnamed friend told the outlet of their bond.
Back in April, Prince Harry spoke about his and his wife’s visit to Windsor Castle to see Queen Elizabeth before they made their way to the Netherlands for this year’s Invictus Games.
“We have a really special relationship, we talk about things she can’t talk about with anyone else,” Prince Harry told Hoda Kotb of his grandmother during their “Today” interview.
“Being with her, it was great. It was just so nice to see her,” he continued. “She’s on great form. She’s always got a great sense of humor with me, and I’m just making sure that she’s, you know, protected, and got the right people around her.”
Prince Harry shared that he and Markle had tea with the monarch and had a great time catching up.
