Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, the India National Cricket Team lost the second T20I of the three-match series by 16 runs against the Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday, January 5.

India won the toss and elected to bowl first in the match. The decision proved to be a poor one for the side as Sri Lanka posted 206/6 on the board. Dasun Shanaka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka played brilliant innings.

Talking about bowlers, pacer Umran Malik was quite expensive, but he picked up three wickets. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel bowled beautifully and bagged two wickets while leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal bagged one wicket.

Chasing the target, India were reduced to 34/4 and soon to 57/5. Then, Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav stitched up an absolutely remarkable partnership of 91 runs in 40 balls.

In the end, Dasun Shanaka dismissed Axar Patel for 65 in the 20th over and India were restricted to 190/8. This was the first win for Sri Lanka against India in India in 13 T20Is, with the last one also coming in Pune in 2016.

Both bowling and batting – powerplay hurt us – Hardik Pandya

At the post-match presentation ceremony, captain Hardik admitted that the performance of India in powerplay overs both with bat and ball was extremely poor. He said:

“Both bowling and batting – powerplay hurt us. We made basic errors which we shouldn’t do at this level. Learning should be the basics we can control. You can have a bad day but shouldn’t be going away from basics.”

Hardik Pandya further talked about left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh bowling way too many no-balls and said:

“In this situation, it’s very difficult. In past as well he’s bowled no-balls. It’s not about blaming but no ball is a crime.”

Hardik Pandya, however, was impressed with Suryakumar Yadav’s performance and while talking about Rahul Tripathi batting at No.3, he said that they wanted to give him the position where he feels comfortable. Hardik Pandya said:

“Surya had a fantastic run at four. Anyone who comes into the team – you want to give them a role they are comfortable in (talking about Rahul at three).”
