Kaepernick Unsigned One Month After Workout

One month after Colin Kaepernick worked out for the Las Vegas Raiders, the 34-year-old is still unsigned. With training camp quickly approaching, there are conflicting reports as to how Kaepernick performed in front of the Raiders’ brass.

According to former NFL star Warren Sapp, Kaepernick wasn’t nearly impressive enough to warrant a shot at making the Raiders’ roster this summer. The Hall of Famer said on VladTV that he heard Kaepernick’s workout went extremely poorly.

“I heard it was a disaster,” Sapp said. “I heard it was one of the worst workouts ever. I’m wondering how the hell this happened and the tape didn’t get out, right?”

Shortly after the workout, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Kaepernick had “impressed” the Raiders. Kaepernick’s agent, Jeff Nalley, disputed the supposed rumors that Sapp shared.

“I guess Warren didn’t talk to the General Manager or the head coach,” Nalley told ProFootballTalk. “I spoke to the G.M. [Dave Zieger] several times and he said they all thought Kap was in great shape and threw the ball really well and encouraged any team to call him about the workout and he would tell them the same. I’m surprised Warren would say that, because it’s not true and you would think he would want Kap on a team.”

The workout was Kaepernick’s first for an NFL team in five years. Kaepernick last played in an NFL game on Jan. 1, 2017, when he was 29 years old. Kaepernick will turn 35 on Nov. 3, which would be the start of Week 9.

The odds were against Kaepernick from making the Raiders before the workout started. Derek Carr is entrenched as the team’s starter. Las Vegas traded for Jarrett Stidham earlier in the offseason, and Nick Mullens is under contract with the team. Both backups are much younger than Kaepernick with more recent playing experience.

Kaepernick had 12,271 passing yards for 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in 69 career games from 2011-2016. Kaepernick added 2,300 yards and 13 scores on the ground.
