Kraft Heinz Recalls Ham And Cheese Products Over Cross-Contamination Concerns

Kraft Heinz Foods Company has voluntarily recalled certain ready-to-eat ham and cheese products because of concerns over possible cross-contamination.

The recall affects certain Oscar Mayer-branded Ham & Cheese LOAF products, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a release.

The problem with the affected products was they were sliced on the same equipment that was used for an under-processed product. As the equipment was not cleaned in between processing, it runs the risk of cross-contamination.

Cross-contamination happens when bacteria are transferred from one substance to another, such as food to food or equipment to food, according to Healthline.

“This is especially true when handling raw meat, poultry, eggs and seafood,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

Avoiding cross-contamination is a key measure to prevent food-borne illness. People can do this by simple actions like separating raw meats from other foods and washing hands and surfaces often when preparing food.

There have been no reports of “adverse reactions” from eating the recalled ham and cheese products. But those who have any concerns should contact their healthcare provider.

The recall affects some 2,400 pounds of the Oscar Mayer Ham & Cheese Loaf with the codes ranging from “07 Feb 2023 20:40 7B” to “07 Feb 2023 22:16 7B.” They came in 16-oz vacuum-packed packaging and had establishment number “Est. 537V” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products were produced on Oct. 10. A sample photo of the packaging was available on the FSIS website.

“These items were shipped to distribution centers in Ohio and Virginia, and further distributed for retail sales,” the agency noted. “FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.”

Consumers are asked not to eat the recalled items and instead, take them back to the place of purchase. Those with questions about the recall can contact the company’s consumer hotline at 1-866-572-3806. People can also contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854.
