A man in India was arrested for allegedly killing his 28-year-old live-in partner and chopping her body into 35 pieces.

The crime, which took place six months ago in the capital city of New Delhi, was solved last week.

The police identified the accused as Aftab Poonawala and the victim as Shraddha. According to local media reports, the duo started their relationship while they were in Mumbai, a city in the western part of India.

When their families refused to accept their relationship, the couple moved to New Delhi, and started living in a rented apartment, ANI reported.

After moving to New Delhi, the woman reportedly started forcing the accused to marry her, the authorities said. On May 18, the couple got into an argument, and in a fit of rage, Aftab allegedly strangled his partner to death.

He then chopped the woman’s body into multiple pieces and then stored them in a refrigerator. Over the next 18 nights, the accused disposed of the body parts.

The incident came to light when the woman’s parents were unable to contact her. After multiple attempts, the woman’s father came to New Delhi to check on his daughter. When he found her apartment locked, he filed a missing complaint, Free Press Journal reported.

The father also told the police about her relationship with Aftab, following which the accused was taken into custody. During questioning, he confessed to committing the crime.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, including murder. The police are currently further investigating the incident.

Last week, a man was arrested in South Carolina after a woman and her newborn baby were found dead in a home. Deputies responded to a 911 call about a missing woman at a home on the 200 block of Saw Mill Road. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found a woman and her recently-born baby boy dead. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Clarissa Michelle Winchester, 22. The accused, 21-year-old Tyler Wilkins, was charged with murder, kidnapping and unlawful neglect of a child. The woman died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck, an autopsy performed by the coroner’s office confirmed.
