A man was killed and his friend was injured after they were attacked Sunday by a group of assailants at Chulakana village of Panipat district in India, police said Monday.

A total of eight people, whose names were not released, were booked for charges of murder and attempted murder after the family members of the deceased filed a complaint, the Hindustan Times reported.

The deceased man was identified as 31-year-old Rakesh Kumar and his injured friend as Ashu Kumar.

They were both rushed to a hospital following the attack. Doctors declared Rakesh dead on arrival, while Ashu remains in the hospital, undergoing treatment.

According to Niranjan, the father of the deceased, the incident occurred Sunday night when Rakesh and Ashu were on their way back from his fields.

When the two friends reached the village bus stop, the suspects allegedly stopped them and then attacked Rakesh and Ashu with sharp-edged weapons. They fled the scene.

Officer Sunil Kumar of the Samalkha police station said a case has been registered against the eight people under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offense committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.

No other information about the case has been disclosed as of this writing.

A July bus stop incident in Mumbai, India, also left a 25-year-old man dead, The Times of India reported.

The man, identified as Suraj Manoj Tiwari, of Delhi, was attacked and killed with a paver block while sleeping at a bus stop in the western suburb of Versova.

Passersby informed the police after spotting Tiwari’s body. Several head wounds were found on the street musician’s body.

In January, a man was stabbed to death for resisting a robbery at a bus stop near Badli Mor in northwest Delhi, where he was waiting for a bus.

After stabbing him, the suspects robbed the 38-year-old man, taking his mobile phone and a bag, the Hindustan Times reported. According to police, the suspects immediately fled the scene.

The CCTV cameras captured the incident and helped police identify the suspects.

On the day of the incident, the Shalimar Bagh police station responded to a call from Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital regarding an unidentified man who was brought dead by a patrolling van.

There was a deep cut on the man’s left thigh, and he died due to excessive bleeding.

“The staff of the patrolling van told the local police that they found the man unconscious and bleeding at Badli Mor bus stand on the Ring Road. Accordingly, a case of murder was registered and investigation was taken up,” said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Usha Rangnani.
