Australia hopes it’s seen the back of its Covid crisis with the news that Matthew Wade has returned a negative test.

Wade tested positive for Covid during the week but was set to play against England on Friday night anyway while remaining distanced from his teammates.

He was the second player to test positive after Adam Zampa missed Australia’s match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Cricket Australia has confirmed that Wade tested negative on Saturday, while Zampa is also primed to make his return.

Australia’s next match is against Ireland on Monday and the hosts will hope that the virus has not spread to any other members.

Australia needs to beat Ireland and Afghanistan by big margins to boost its net run rate, but Glenn Maxwell said the team will prioritise winning first and foremost.

“If you go into the game thinking about net-run-rate, it can make it really difficult,” Maxwell told reporters.

“You’ve got to get into winning positions before you can start thinking about net-run-rate, otherwise you’ll shoot yourself in the foot really.

“We’ve almost got 3,000 games’ worth of experience in our side which is pretty extraordinary.

“That experience in T20 cricket certainly helps, especially in this sort of tournament where the smallest mistakes can get highlighted. You make one mistake and you’re out of the tournament.”
