Mavs Could Go For Sexton As Doncic’s Next Co-Star

The Dallas Mavericks have a void to fill in following Jalen Brunson’s departure to join the New York Knicks this offseason.

Though the Mavs struck gold when they acquired Christian Wood in a trade last June 24, the retooling of their roster is far from over as they need to pick up the vital pieces that could give their franchise star Luka Doncic a helping hand.

The Cleveland Cavaliers might have the answer to the current predicament of the MarkCuban-owned franchise.

Appearing on the Wine & Gold Talk podcast, Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor and Hayden Grove bared that Dallas has their eyes on a restricted free agent in the form of Collin Sexton.

However, the Mavericks could be facing a tall order in acquiring the services of Sexton as the Cavs are expected to ask the rumored interested team to sweeten the pot to let go of the No. 8 overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft class.

“The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored as a team that may have [an] interest because they lost Jalen Brunson,” Fedor said. “They don’t have cap space. So it would have to be a sign-and-trade worked out with the Cavs. And I’m told that the Cavs are not very attracted to any of the pieces that Dallas would be willing to send back to them in a potential sign-and-trade.”

Dallas could be offering a veteran-laden package that consists of Dwight Powell, Reggie Bullock and Tim Hardaway Jr. as they don’t have a first-round draft pick until 2025 and Josh Green is the only one on a rookie deal in their lineup.

What the Cavaliers are seeking in exchange for Sexton remains to be seen.

Sexton, an Alabama Crimson Tide product, only played 11 games last season due to a torn left meniscus and averaged 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per outing.

The 23-year-old became a restricted free agent after not agreeing to a rookie extension before the trade deadline a few months ago.

Although he sat on the sidelines for the entire 2021-22 season while nursing a knee injury, the Cavs are expected to mount up a bid to retain him as he has been one of the solid contributors on the floor before he succumbed to a season-ending plight.

Sexton, who normed 23.4 points per game during his last full season, is said to be ready to suit up once again after making a “complete recovery” from the aforementioned knee injury.

It just remains to be seen for which team.
