Meghan Markle Allegedly ‘Furious’ Over Vanity Fair Cover That Confirmed Royal Romance, Book Claims

Meghan Markle was allegedly “furious” after Vanity Fair focused on her relationship with Prince Harry instead of her acting and philanthropy in her 2017 cover story with the magazine, a new royal biography has claimed.

In his new tell-all book “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors,” British author Tom Bower — who is known for his investigative journalism and biographies of notable figures and royals, including the unauthorized Prince Charles biography “Rebel Prince” — described Markle’s alleged reaction to Vanity Fair’s September 2017 issue, which featured her on the cover with the headline, “She’s Just Wild About Harry.”

Bower claimed that Markle was “ecstatic” when the magazine agreed to do a story about her and put her on its cover, according to excerpts from the book published by London’s The Times Saturday.

In the Vanity Fair article, Markle confirmed that she and Prince Harry were a couple and hinted that they would soon announce their engagement, saying, “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.” Shortly after the issue came out, the couple announced their engagement.

However, Bower claimed that after the piece was published, Markle called her publicists, Ken Sunshine and Keleigh Thomas Morgan, telling them that Buckingham Palace was not happy about the article and that their agency, Sunshine Sachs, should have had comments she made about her and Prince Harry’s relationship removed.

International Business Times could not independently verify Bower’s claims.

According to Bower, Sam Kashner, a longtime Vanity Fair contributor who was assigned to interview the Duchess of Sussex, was told that Markle was “under strict orders” from Prince Harry’s public relations team not to discuss sensitive topics, including Donald Trump, race and her romance with the prince.

Bower claimed that Markle had convinced Prince Harry that the article would focus on the celebration of the 100th episode of “Suits,” the TV show that she was filming in Toronto, Canada, where the interview was conducted.

“Sunshine Sachs had demanded that the magazine satisfy Meghan’s requirement that she be presented as a philanthropist and activist,” the author alleged.

But according to the new book, Markle allegedly complained that the story that ended up being published minimized her work as an actor, philanthropist and activist and did not include the anecdote about her childhood letter-writing campaign against a sexist dish soap ad. Bower said the magazine had to cut it because its fact-checkers couldn’t verify the story.

“The interview triggered sensational reactions: Meghan had used her relationship with Harry to promote herself. The Hollywoodisation of the royal family had sealed Meghan’s fate as Harry’s fiancée,” Bower wrote.

The author claimed that after the piece came out, Kashner received a phone call from Markle and that she told him: “I thought this could have been an actual friendship. I don’t now think that can happen.”

“She complained because she wasn’t presented in the way she wanted… She demanded that the media do what she expects. I felt manipulated,” Bower quoted Kashner as saying.

The excerpts from Bower’s book also included claims that Markle’s PR team was told that Markle “didn’t get the cover in her own name… but because of who she was likely to marry.”

Reps for Markle and Prince Harry have not commented on Bower’s book and claims as of this writing.

“Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors,” which was written without the cooperation of Markle, will hit shelves Thursday.
