Meghan Markle hoped to improve her relationship with Kate Middleton while she was in the U.K. with her husband Prince Harry and their children earlier this month, a royal expert has claimed.
Royal and entertainment reporter Neil Sean said in a new video on his YouTube Channel that reports from royal watchers claiming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reconciled with Prince William and Middleton and have been FaceTiming and exchanging gifts with the Cambridges in recent months were “not true.”
He cited an unnamed “good source” as saying that Markle “allegedly was really hoping to reconcile with Kate Middleton using the children” during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this month “to try and rebond the whole family together.”
“One way or another that really wasn’t meant to be,” Sean added.
While they were not seen publicly interacting during the Jubilee celebrations, it was reported that Prince Harry and Markle extended an olive branch to Prince William and Middleton, inviting them to their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday party at Frogmore Cottage on June 4.
However, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reportedly declined their invitation. Prince William and Middleton visited Cardiff Castle in Wales that day with their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and attended the “Platinum Party at the Palace” concert at Buckingham Palace later that evening.
“Things are still fraught — William is still wary of spending any time alone with Harry as you never quite know what may be reported back afterward,” an unnamed U.K.-based insider told Page Six.
But Prince William and Middleton made sure to pay tribute to their niece on social media on her birthday.
“Wishing a very happy birthday to Lilibet, turning one today!” the couple tweeted.
In June last year, an unnamed source told Us Weekly that Middleton has been reaching out to Markle “a lot more” since Lilibet’s birth.
“[Kate has been] sending [notes and] gifts and trying to build up a relationship,” the insider claimed. “The firm has been instructing staffers to reach out more to Harry and Meghan to get them to soften a bit.”
A month later, another insider told the outlet that Middleton and Markle had put the bridesmaid dress incident behind them and “called a truce.”
During her tell-all with Oprah Winfrey last year, Markle claimed that her sister-in-law had made her cry over a disagreement about flower girl dresses ahead of her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. But the former actress said that Middleton later apologized to her and brought her a note and flowers.
