With the NFL, NBA and NHL all in their respective offseasons, Major League Baseball will take center stage during All-Star week. The league’s best players will be on hand for the 2022 Home Run Derby and MLB All-Star Game.
MLB All-Star Week starts Monday, July 18 with the Home Run Derby at Dodger Stadium. The event is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EDT, featuring some of the sport’s top sluggers. ESPN will have the television coverage.
On Tuesday, July 19, Dodger Stadium will host the 2022 MLB All-Star Game at 7:30 pm. EDT. Fox will broadcast the contest on TV.
The MLB All-Star Game has returned to being a complete exhibition game. There were actually some stakes in the contest from 2003-2016, during which time the All-Star Game determined whether the American League or National League would get home-field advantage in that season’s World Series.
The World Series participant with the best regular-season winning percentage will have home-field advantage in the 2022 Fall Classic.
The AL defeated the NL 5-2 at Coors Field in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays was named the game’s MVP, and Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani was the winning pitcher. The two players went on to become the top candidates for the 2021 AL MVP award.
Ohtani came up short in the first round of the 2021 Home Run Derby. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso won the event, becoming the Home Run Derby champion for the second straight year.
There was no All-Star Game or Home Run Derby in 2020 because of the pandemic.
