Buckingham Palace announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. Following the news, Twitter users from around the world have been posting tributes honoring the legacy of the world’s longest-reigning monarch. The 96-year-old monarch marked her 70th year as the Queen this year before she passed away at her Scotland estate, Balmoral Castle.

Twitter tributes have been flooding in since Buckingham Palace posted signs announcing the death of the Queen outside the palace gates Thursday. From world leaders to British citizens and other people around the world, tribute posts to the Queen have made #QueenElizabeth a trending topic on the social media site.

One user posted a collage showing four photos of Queen Elizabeth from her 20s to her 80s. “The London bridge has fallen,” the user captioned the collage. “7 decades, 15 prime ministers, 1 QUEEN,” the user wrote.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are featured in one post, with the user stating that the collage of two pictures showing the Queen and her husband in their younger years as a couple and another picture depicting them in their older years is the user’s “favorite.”

Prince Philip passed away in April last year aged 99. At that time, Buckingham Palace said that Queen Elizabeth II experienced “deep sorrow” following her husband’s death.

Canadian politician Charmaine Williams said she feels the loss of Queen Elizabeth II “immensely.” Williams, who explained that she was born to Jamaican parents, said “the commonwealth has been all I’ve ever known.” She went on to thank the Queen for her “decades of service.”

One user posted a photo of the Queen wearing a bright yellow ensemble as she waved to the crowd with a smile, stating that the British monarch who took over the throne at 25 years of age “was truly a style icon among other things.”

Another user praised the Queen’s 70 years on the throne, calling it “a pillar of leadership.”

Animal communicator Jane Kennedy posted a collage of the Queen as a young girl with her supposed first corgi dog, Susan, and another picture showing the monarch as an older woman with three corgis walking with her by the seashore.

Blogger Mariellen Ward honored the Queen by looking back at how the Head of the Commonwealth was only “a young woman who was forced by destiny to accept a role that required unwavering duty, for life” when she was enthroned.

Many other Twitter users rallied to show their support for the British royal family and mourned the Queen’s death.

Queen Elizabeth was enthroned in 1952 and throughout her seven-decade reign, saw more than a dozen prime ministers change within the British political realm. Her son, former Prince Charles, has now become King Charles III.

The new King is expected to address the nation Friday after he and his wife, now Queen Consort Camilla, return to London, BBC News reported.

Queen Elizabeth II, whose full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, was put under medical supervision earlier Thursday. Senior royals, including all of the Queen’s children, traveled to Balmoral Castle immediately to be with her.

The new heir to the throne Prince William also traveled to the Queen’s Scotland residence. Multiple outlets reported that Prince Harry, one of the Queen’s grandchildren, arrived after his grandmother’s death.
