A company is recalling thousands of Murphy beds because they may pose crush hazards. Dozens of injuries have already been reported.
The problem with Cyme Tech’s recalled Murphy beds is that they can actually “break or detach from the wall,” according to the recall alert on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. A unit can then pose “serious impact and crush hazards” if it falls onto someone within the vicinity.
As of the recall date, there have been 146 reports of the issue, with the beds “falling or breaking.” These resulted in 62 injuries, ranging from bruising and concussions to broken bones and lacerations.
“Failure to properly assemble and/or attach the bed to the wall may result in the bed becoming detached from the wall and falling, posing a tip-over and entrapment hazard that could result in serious injury,” the company noted in its announcement.
As such, customers who have bought the bed are advised to stop using them. Instead, they should contact the company to have their beds inspected and repaired.
In total, the recall affects some 8,200 full- and queen-sized Murphy beds. They came in various colors under brand names Ivy Bronx, Orren Ellis, Stellar Home Furniture and Wade Logan, which were sold online via various websites, including Amazon, Wal-mart, Overstock and Wayfair, from February 2014 to May 2022.
“The models included in the recall are Low Profile Murphy wall bed part numbers S214 (Double Bed, Doors Installed Vertically), S215 (Queen Bed, Doors Installed Vertically), S234 (Double Bed, Doors Installed Horizontally), S235 (Queen Bed, Doors Installed Horizontally),” according to the announcement.
Photos of the recalled Murphy beds are available on the CPSC website.
Customers may check the receipts to see if the bed they own is included in the recall. If they don’t have it anymore, they can try going to the site where they bought it from and check for the receipt there. The company is also contacting those who bought the beds.
Those who find that their Murphy beds are affected by the recall should fill out the form here for inspection and repair. Customers with questions about the recall may also contact the company at 1-833-408-0501.
