The offseason tension between the Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray has ended with one of the biggest deals in NFL history. The quarterback has agreed to a five-year, $230.5 million contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, making Murray one of the highest-paid players ever.
Murray’s contract extension runs through the 2028 season and gives him an average annual salary of $46.1 million. Only Aaron Rodgers’ $50.27 million average salary is higher than what Murray is going to be paid.
The contract is worth $500,000 more than the $230 million deal that Deshaun Watson signed earlier this offseason. Murray just edges out Watson, who is now the NFL’s third-highest paid player on a per-year basis.

The total value of Murray’s contract ranks third among all NFL players. Josh Allen is second with a six-year, $258 million contract. The $450 million extension that the Kansas City Chiefs gave Patrick Mahomes is still the richest deal in all of U.S. team sports.
Early in the offseason, Murray removed any references to the Cardinals from his social media accounts. There was even speculation that Arizona might look to trade the quarterback. The issues seemingly stemmed from Murray’s unhappiness with his contract, which has now been rectified.
Arizona selected Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Murray has improved each season and been selected to the Pro Bowl in back-to-back years. Murray had a career-high 100.6 passer rating and 270.5 yards per game last season.
Murray was a top 2021 NFL MVP candidate until an injury cost him three games. Murray and the Cardinals stumbled down the stretch, culminating with an embarrassing 34-11 loss against the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Murray has 11,480 passing yards, 1,786 rushing yards and 90 total touchdowns in 46 career games.
