Protestors demanded justice Tuesday for a New Delhi woman dragged miles under a vehicle after getting hit while on a scooter.
Delhi police said a drunken driver hit 20-year-old Anjali Singh’s scooter on New Year’s Day. Her body was then dragged for nearly eight miles, or 12 kilometers, for an hour, according to the Independent.
The event caused outrage in India, with questions over the safety of women in the India capital and the lack of quick police response. Many witnesses made multiple emergency calls while seeing her being dragged.
Asian News Agency tweeted a video of hundreds of protestors attempting to push against police barricades Monday.
Deepak Dahiya, who saw the car dragging her body at 3.22 am, said he made about 20 calls to police, according to the Hindustan Times.
“I heard a car’s noise, and initially it sounded like its tire had burst, but it was still being driven,” Dahiya said. “It was going at the speed of barely 20km per hour, so I could clearly see what was happening. That’s when I saw the body of a girl beneath the car between the two left side tires.”
Delhi police official Sagar Hooda confirmed the event’s details during a news conference Monday. “We have information that the girl’s body was stuck in the car somehow and was dragged for about 10-12 kilometers,” Hooda said.
“The investigation is ongoing… we are looking at multiple angles and will soon complete it, and the accused will get the strictest punishment possible.”
Five men, including a politician from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), were arrested for allegedly occupying the car at the time of the incident, Hooda said.
Protestors gathered outside the district police station investigating the crime and are demanding punishment for the five men, CNN reported.
“My head hangs in shame over the inhuman crime,” Delhi’s Lt. Gov. Vinai Saxena wrote on Twitter Monday. “I am shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators… All aspects are being thoroughly looked into.”
