Socceroos steal Denmark note, Mitch Duke, Graham Arnold reaction, explanation

Fresh vision has emerged showing how a secret Danish tactics note fell into Aussie hands at the World Cup, with Socceroos coach Graham Arnold saying the incident exposed their rivals’ lack of preparation.

The incident, from Australia’s famous 1-0 win over the world No.10 on Thursday morning (AEDT) has already gone viral globally with new footage showing clearly the moment quick-thinking Socceroos striker Mitch Duke picks up the note off the pitch and gives it to Arnold.

The message, which had been exchanged by Danish players including Christian Eriksen, was then passed on to Arnold’s trusted offsiders Andrew Clark and Rene Meulensteen. They can be seen discussing the note, which is believed to have contained confirmation Denmark were switching formation to play with two strikers — as well as a message for Danish players saying “believe”.

Australian officials were already expecting the change but it solidified their imminent plans to bring on another defender, centre back Bailey Wright, as the Socceroos tried to hold their lead.

Asked about the incident ahead of Australia’s huge showdown with Argentina on Sunday morning (AEDT), Arnold took a gentle swipe at Denmark, who were hot favourites going into the match but crashed out of the tournament.

“Mitchell Duke brought it (the note) over to me, and I thought he was being nice cleaning up rubbish,” Arnold said on Friday.

“He handed it to me and I didn’t even look at it. I handed it back. I was just focused on the substitution. I knew when (Bailey Wright) came on that we had to go to a back five. I always have a Plan A, B, C and D… E, for every occasion if you’re down 1-0 or up 1-0.

“In that little way it showed me they didn’t have a plan ready. It was an off-the-cuff thing, if they’re having to send notes out to players… it’s not pre-planned beforehand.

“…Whereas we pre-planned those types of things beforehand so the players know if Bailey Wright comes on like he did they knew straight away we’re going to a back five because we’d already done that messaging.

The incident evokes memories of an infamous act from goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne in the qualification penalty shootout win over Peru.

Video emerged of him tossing away a bottle, with notes written on it, belonging to his Peruvian opposite number during the penalty shootout win that sent the Socceroos to the World Cup. The act was dubbed by fans as a classic piece of “Aussie s***housery.

“Yeah, that happened, we spoke about it,” Redmayne said of the incident.

“If we had notes on our drink bottle and if someone saw that, it would have been thrown a long way away.“I know how much it means to the boys so it was kind of like a kill or be killed moment, so I took my moment.”
