Spain and Portugal are both enduring a heatwave with temperatures above 100 degrees this weekend. Wildfires in Portugal have left 29 people injured, according to reports.

On Sunday, there were 3,000 firefighters and 30 aircraft combating active fires in Portugal, the country’s civil protection agency said. The European Union also activated its air fleet assistance program to allow other nations to help get the fires under control.

Portugal is now under a heightened state of alert that will last until Friday.

“This means (…) we can automatically and preventively activate all emergency and civil protection plans at all territorial levels,” said Interior Administration Minister Jose Luís Carneiro.

The temperature in Portugal has been close to 110 degrees Fahrenheit this weekend, while parts of Spain saw a record temperature of 110 degrees.

State meteorological forecasters AEMET in Spain said on Sunday that the extreme heat could last until Thursday.

The World Meteorological Organization warned in June that Spain faced an “extreme fire risk” due to a heatwave and drought. More than 74,000 acres of Spanish land were destroyed by wildfires causing residents to flee their homes.
