Writers, photographers, and designers from Springs Publishing collected 11 awards at the Georgia Press Association’s 2022 Better Newspaper Contest, the association announced. Four of the awards honored first-place finishes in the circulation-based division in which Springs competed.

The awards were announced June 3 at the GPA’s 135th annual convention in Jekyll Island. Springs Publishing received awards for work that appeared in each of its print publications, which include the Reporter Newspapers, Atlanta Intown, and Atlanta Senior Life.

    Journalism awards

A selection of three business articles published in the Reporter and written by Amy Wenk, Collin Kelley, John Ruch, and Maggie Lee received the first-place award for business writing.

Atlanta Intown’s November, 2021 cover photo was shot by Luis Gaud and designed by Rico Figliolini and Collin Kelley

The cover design of the November issue of Atlanta Intown, which featured an aerial photograph of Midtown Atlanta, took first place in Page One design. Springs contributor Isadora Pennington received the second-place award in the same category for her December cover illustration.

Springs also received a first-place award for Sports Features for articles written by Sammie Purcell and Chesny Young.

Three regular columnists for Springs publications received awards for their monthly pieces.  Charles Seabrook earned a second-place honor for his “Travels with Charlie” column in Atlanta Senior Life. Tim Sullivan took a third-place award for humorous columns for his columns in Atlanta Intown, and Carol Niemi collected a third-place award in the serious columns category for her “Worth Knowing” columns in Reporter Newspapers.

Springs Publishing placed second overall in its division for local news coverage. The first-place award went to Smoke Signals, a monthly newspaper in Big Canoe.

    Advertising awards

Springs Publishing was also recognized with three awards in the Advertising division. Creative Director Rico Figliolini’s work on print ads for ElectroBike won first place and his team was recognized for third place in the Home Furnishings and Newspaper Promotion categories.
