A 23-year-old man in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu pushed a woman in front of a moving train after she rejected his romantic advances, resulting in the victim’s death, according to reports.

The incident occurred at the Thomas Mount railway station in Chennai at around 1 p.m. Thursday, the Indian Express reported.

Satheesh, a resident of the city’s Adambakkam area, had allegedly proposed his love to the victim, a business administration student named Sathya.

When she rejected him, it triggered an argument. He ended up pushing Sathya in a fit of rage, and the university student was run over by the train, a report by the Times of India said.

Satheesh, who is the son of a retired police sub-inspector, allegedly fled the scene.

The government railway police recovered Sathya’s body and sent it for postmortem.

They have also registered a case against Satheesh.

Two special teams were formed to catch the accused, an officer from the Mambalam railway police who wished not to be named was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Authorities were able to nab Satheesh Friday morning, according to the Indian Express.

In a similar incident that happened in India’s Uttar Pradesh state earlier this year, a man attacked a woman and took his own life after she rejected his marriage proposal.

The 25-year-old man struck the victim with a hammer at Delhi’s Meet Nagar locality on Feb. 21 as she was headed for work. He then returned home and died by suicide.

Authorities learned of the attack after the victim’s father took her to a hospital.

“The victim’s father told the police in his complaint that he had fixed the marriage of his daughter. But one of his neighbors wanted to marry her and was angry after her engagement,” North East deputy police commissioner Sanjay Kumar Sain said.

A case of attempted murder was registered at the local police station, and a probe was initiated.

Around three-quarters of adults in India see violence against women as a “very big problem” in their society, data from a 2019-2020 survey conducted by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center think tank showed.

If you have thoughts of suicide, confidential help is available for free at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Call 1-800-273-8255. The line is available 24 hours, every day.
