A variety of Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s pie products are being voluntarily recalled because they may contain an undeclared allergen. These pies were distributed in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Flowers Foods initiated the recall of certain Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s glazed pies after finding out that one of the ingredients contained soy, which was not listed on the products’ labels, the company announced on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
Soy is one of the most common food allergens. Someone with a soy allergy or sensitivity may “run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”
Allergic reactions may be “unpredictable” and may happen “anywhere,” the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) explained. Symptoms of a soy allergy may include diarrhea, shortness of breath, hives, vomiting or stomach cramps. But on rare occasions, it may also lead to potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, which is why those with allergies should have an epinephrine injector ready should a serious allergic reaction occur.
“If you are uncertain whether a reaction warrants epinephrine, use it right away, because the benefits of epinephrine far outweigh the risk that a dose may not have been necessary,” the organization noted.
There have been no reported illnesses or incidents in connection with the current recall so far.
The recall affects several Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s pie products. They include Mrs. Freshley’s Apple Fruit Pie and Cherry Fruit Pie and Tastykake-branded Glazed Apple Pie, Glazed Caramel Apple Pie, Glazed Cherry Pie and Glazed Lemon Flavored Pie. The recall also affects the Tastykake Variety Glazed Pie Shipper, which contains three pie varieties.
Customers can find the UPC codes, “Enjoy By” dates and product codes of the affected products on the FDA website. They were distributed “throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico” from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6.
