Taylor Swift received backlash online after a report named her as the celebrity with the worst private jet CO2 emissions, but one fan tried to deflect the outrage.
The “All Too Well” singer came under fire online after a study, conducted by digital marketing firm Yard, revealed that flights by her private jet have emitted 8,293.54 metric tons of carbon this year. For reference, the study shared that’s “1,184.8 times more than the average person’s total annual emissions.”
The report, which garnered its information from the Twitter account @celebjets, said that Swift’s plane has taken 170 trips and racked up over 22,923 minutes in air this year, which is the equivalent of almost 16 days.
Swift’s representatives told Rolling Stone in a statement that the singer wasn’t part of “most” of these trips as her private jet “is loaned out regularly to other individuals.”
As the backlash against Swift continued to mount online over the report, one self-described Swiftie took to Twitter to claim that the singer donated $10,000 to her environmental organization, TMZ reported.
The woman, who goes by Britt and has the handle @taysrep89, shared a screenshot of an alleged DM from Swift claiming to offer to send a donation to her organization.
The fan claimed to be the head of an environmental charity called the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). However, according to TMZ, while EPA exists, there are no legitimate hits with the word “National” at the front.
“TAYLOR SWIFT JUST OFFERED TO DONATE 10K TO MY ENVIRONMENT ORGANIZATION?? THIS IS BIGGER THAN ALL OUR DONATIONS FROM THE PAST 3 MONTHS. THANK YOU SO MUCH @taylorswift13,” the woman tweeted, alongside a screenshot of the purported exchange with Swift.
She then doubled down on her claim that Swift donated the amount to her alleged organization.
“Yes, this is actually real guys!! I’m shaking while typing this, Taylor Swift is truly an angel. I can never thank her enough for how much she just did for us and the environment,” the fan added in another tweet, alongside a screenshot of a DM of Swift allegedly informing her that she just sent the money.
Many Twitter users expressed doubt over the fan’s claims considering the timing of Britt’s tweets.
“Could you link to your organization please and give some details about it? I can’t find it anywhere and think you’re doing greenwashing for Taylor after her private jet emissions were published,” one commented.
“Weird timing. She’s using you!” another claimed, referring to Swift. A third user simply called the claims “fake.”
Meanwhile, several of Swift’s fans took to social media to share their thoughts on her private flights.
“This is very shocking to me, honestly. More and more celebs are emphasizing the importance of reducing emissions, but it’s this outrageous overconsumption that needs to be curbed,” one fan wrote on Reddit. ‘I love Taylor, but I’d never take a statement from her about the climate seriously after seeing this. I really think she has the means to do better.”
Another added, “I love Taylor. I also have a strong negative opinion of celebrity private jet culture and think rich people, in general, have learned to prioritize their comfort and freedom over the rest of us having a safe climate, and I think this is morally wrong of her.”
Kylie Jenner also recently faced backlash on social media after it was revealed that her private jet has been regularly taking short flights.
Twitter account @celebjets revealed earlier this month that Jenner’s private jet flew 17 minutes from Camarillo, California, to Van Nuys, California. Three days after the quick flight, the 24-year-old beauty mogul boasted about her and beau Travis Scott’s private jets on Instagram.
“You wanna take mine or yours ?” she wrote alongside a photo of them posing in front of the jets.
